Jimmy Barnes

Jimmy Barnes Stranded in Bali Music in Paradise 2026

Jimmy Barnes recently extended his lead as the artist with the most #1 albums in Australia this week, as Defiant stormed to the top of the ARIA Albums Chart.

This marks his 16th album at #1, putting Jimmy two ahead of the Beatles (post-1965 total) and three ahead of Taylor Swift. He has also reached the chart penthouse as part of Cold Chisel: the group first landed at #1 in 1982 with Circus Animals. Defiant extends his chart-topping run to 43 years. Jimmy’s first #1 album was Bodyswerve in 1984, followed by For The Working Class Man in 1985, Freight Train Heart in 1987, Barnestorming in 1988, Two Fires in 1990, Soul Deep in 1991, Hits in 1996, Double Happiness in 2005, The Rhythm and the Blues in 2009, 30:30 Hindsight in 2014, Soul Searchin’ in 2016, My Criminal Record in 2019, Flesh and Blood in 2021, Soul Deep 30 in 2022 and Blue Christmas in 2022. Jimmy has won six ARIA Awards as a solo artist and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2005. Cold Chisel was inducted in 1993.

On his success, Jimmy said: “An album is successful to me when I put everything down on tape. It is even more successful when those feelings connect with other people. To have my album hit number one is the cherry on top of all that. I am loving playing this bunch of songs. I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my audience. So thanks to you all.”

Jimmy Barnes is a Scottish-Australian rock singer and songwriter.

His career, both as a solo performer and as the lead vocalist with the rock band Cold Chisel, has made him one of the most popular and best-selling Australian music artists of all time.

James Dixon Barnes of Glasgow via Adelaide was just 16 when he joined the band Cold Chisel in 1973. Raised on tough soul music and gutsy rock, Jimmy brought his monumental passion and a versatile vocal style to this five-piece band who would eventually become the most powerful live act in the heyday of Australian pub rock.

In 2017, Barnes was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the performing arts as a musician, singer and songwriter, and through support for not-for-profit organisations, particularly to children with a disability.

Jimmy’s music has been our national soundtrack for 50 years, and his iconic status in the history of Australian rock’n’roll is reflected in this induction.

Lots of things have changed over his decades in the public eye, but the one constant is his powerful connection with live audiences across more than 10,000 gigs. Night after night. Year after year.

Ian Moss

Ian Moss Stranded in Bali Music in Paradise 2026

Respected as one of Australia’s iconic musicians, Ian Moss delivers an unforgettable sound

– not only as a telling soloist on guitar but especially with his silken voice, ringing with clarity and resonating with pure soul. While primarily recognised as an axeman of unusual tenacity and sweet melodic sensibility, Ian’s distinctive vocal is the essential signature of his soulful, bluesy muse – as it has been since his first tentative foray into music during the early 1970s.

Fate intervened when he answered an advertisement for a guitarist in a shop window in 1973, joining the band that was to become a legend in Australia – Cold Chisel. By 1980, with the release of the seminal East album, Cold Chisel was the biggest band in the country.

While the band’s Last Stand tour in December 1983 closed an important chapter in Ian Moss’s musical career, Cold Chisel remains one of Australia’s favourite bands long after its demise.

Ian Moss Stranded in Bali Music in Paradise 2026

Enjoying the status of Australia’s best guitarist, Moss carefully evolved into a solo artist of the same calibre and commanding the same respect as Cold Chisel. After five years of patient nurturing, Moss released his debut single Tucker’s Daughter in January 1989, and caused an immediate sensation. The anthemic song – which Moss wrote in collaboration with Don Walker – sat in the Top 10 for 11 weeks and hit No. 1 for two weeks, achieving gold sales status after 15 weeks and selling more than 73,000 copies. Moss’s second solo single, Telephone Booth, was released in June that year, hit the Top 10 and remained in the Top 20 for 10 weeks.

As Cold Chisel’s biographer Anthony O’Grady observed,

“When Moss goes into guitar dream world he pulls out chords and notes and sounds that do not fit the plot as such, but which create new dimensions – astounding stuff that can never be reached through intellectual process, only through a quantum leap of intuition and imagination.”

The Cruel Sea

The Cruel Sea

I’ve loved The Cruel Sea ever since I walked into the Harold Park Hotel in 1987 and saw this great instrumental band for the first time.

Led by the unique guitar stylings of Danny Rumour, The Cruel Sea were unlike any other band I had ever heard.

At first, the influences and references were quite obvious – surf instrumental music similar to classic acts like The Ventures, The Shadows and The Atlantics – but they grew and absorbed so many other influences. Country, soul, blues, funk, Latino and reggae all went into the mix.

This ever-growing gumbo of music just got tastier and spicier.

No one plays like Danny Rumour. He’s a one-off, a gifted musician who is a gift to the world. And no one plays like Ken Gormly, the bass player. He makes the music bubble and bounce in a way that makes it also fat, solid and dependable. The drummer, Jim Elliott, is also a one-off. A rhythm aficionado, his playing has a wit and intelligence that always complements and supports not only the other instruments but the songs themselves.

In 1989, I, Tex Perkins, was invited to write and sing with this wonderful band and continued to do so for over 20 years.

There were many amazing, triumphant performances, world tours, platinum albums, awards and blah blah blah! We had a good run. We eventually slowed down and our activities grew less frequent. Then, in 2015, our keyboard player and second guitarist, the enormously talented James Cruickshank, died from cancer treatment. It was a huge blow to not only the band but many friends and fans. As a band and as people, we drifted apart. Perhaps James’ death brought more pain than we could have anticipated. I didn’t imagine The Cruel Sea would ever play again. I mean, who could replace Cruickers?

But, as they say, time heals all wounds, and you know what else heals? Music!

We, The Cruel Sea, are honoured to welcome the great Matt Walker into the fold.

Matt really is the right guy for this job. A brilliant singer, songwriter, producer and guitar player, Matt fits in perfectly. The band have known him and loved his music since he would open for us back in the 1990s. I am in awe of these great musicians and truly grateful to be back playing with The Cruel Sea. What more can I say?

Tex Perkins

Magic Dirt

Magic Dirt live in Bali 2026

The seminal female-fronted alternative rock band of the 90’s formed in 1991 out of the dust and noise of the industrial town of Geelong.

It wasn’t long before the band was packing out pubs in Melbourne and supporting bands such as Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth and Pavement. Their second EP, ‘Life Was Better’ (1994), debuted at number 1 on the alternative charts staying there for a staggering 75 weeks.

As the band continued to grow a massive live following touring the country, their much anticipated first album arrived in the form of ‘Friends In Danger’ (1996), a dark, brooding and heavy as all hell slab of sludge/slacker rock released by Warner Brothers U.S. They then followed up with another blistering feedback drenched monster, ‘Young and Full of the Devil’ (1998).

The band was now recognised as a major live drawcard and played many festivals including the Big Day Out, Livid, Meredith Music Festival, Falls Festival and Splendour in the Grass. In 2000 the band released ‘What Are Rockstars Doing Today’ which included the anthemic guitar pop smash, ‘Dirty Jeans’, and propelled the band again to tour the UK, Europe, New Zealand and Japan with the single reaching #12 on JJJ’s Hottest 100. In 2003, with their pop-edge firmly to the fore, the band released the multi-ARIA Award-nominated album ‘Tough Love’ which hit #15 on the ARIA charts.

Magic Dirt continued to blitz the national live music circuit cementing their status as one of Australia’s best loved and highly respected bands.

In September 2006 they released their 5th critically acclaimed studio album, ‘Snow White’, again making a debut in the Top 40 and the band returned to the road. Later that same year, after leaving Warner Australia, the band released an experimental all-noise album ‘Roky’s Room’ and ‘Beast’, both to be released on the bands own label, ‘Emergency Music’. In 2008 with the release of their 6th full length album, ‘Girl’, Magic Dirt embarked on their biggest national tour to date, a whopping 42 date run.

Magic Dirt are a significant and essential part of Australian rock history with an undeniable alchemy propelled by steadfast powerhouse drummer Adam Robertson, the cool and mighty driving bass of Dean Turner, the super hooky, super-charged rock and roll blitz of lead guitarist Raul Sanchez, and the ever compelling and distinct force of nature, lead singer and songwriter, Adalita.

Apart from the band’s vigorous work ethic and the tenacious devotion to their music, the band have also, notably, recorded a John Peel session, appeared on multiple movie soundtracks, Dean co-designed his own effects pedal, the ‘Big Bottom’ with Tim Brennan of Tym Guitars, their song ‘Bodysnatcher’ was included in Toby Creswell’s ‘1001 Songs: The Great Songs of All Time and the Artists, Stories and Secrets Behind Them’, headlined the infamous Wanda Beach Surf Club show in Cronulla in 1995 which has it’s own Facebook page and was attended by senior editor of Rolling Stone America, David Fricke, who said he hadn’t seen anything like it since the start of punk and of course, the band were also featured on an Australian postage stamp.

In 2009 the band suffered the devastating loss of founding member and bassist, Dean Turner and consequently after his passing, the band went on an indefinite hiatus. Nearly a decade later, after a chance reunion in their hometown of Geelong, the band have decided to hit the road again, in honour of their bandmate and their long and extensive legacy.

With their inimitable chemistry Magic Dirt have amassed a legion of loyal and devoted fans with whom they maintain a longstanding and important relationship. Their high energy live shows are the stuff of legend.

Magic Dirt will continue to influence and inspire generations to come, but for now, the band are excited to be on the road again and are looking forward to turnin’ up loud and rockin’ out.
