They say nothing can evoke great memories like music!

And nothing can transport you back to your favourite surfing moments then playing Sunnyboys songs, or better still seeing them live with friends in this unique event we have created just for you.

In 2012 after a 21 year hiatus, everyone’s favourite surf band – Sunnyboys reformed for a mini festival called “Dig It Up” an event organized by the Hoodoo Gurus.

The Gurus played an amazing Surf Music In Paradise week in June 2019, and planning is underway to host them again in April 2021 for their 40’th anniversary celebration. It just seems so right that Sunnyboys are now playing our unique surf music festival now. Yeeow!

Playing under the alternative moniker – Kids in Dust the Sunnyboys got back together “just for fun and for old times’ sake at Dig It Up.”

Seven years later and Sunnyboys 2.0 have been more popular than ever, playing a multitude of sold out tours and a bunch of big festivals, including a co-headline appearance to 45,000 people for A Day On The Green 2015.

Sunnyboys sold-out Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, the Sydney Opera House, set a venue attendance record at the Coolangatta Hotel (previously held by Noiseworks) and played multiple sold-out shows in Melbourne, Perth and beachside Byron Bay, not far from their spiritual surfing home in Kingscliff.

You know what is even more trippy is that the 2019 edition of Sunnyboys (featuring all original members) have been together longer than the young group who burned so brightly back in the 80’s, but also burned-out so quickly.

This incarnation do not have to deal with recording schedules and the pressures of producing radio hit songs, so with a mutual love and respect for the timeless tunes they created back in the day, Sunnyboys can now just concentrate on what they do best, what they are really reknowned for – playing live and providing the soundtrack for good times.

Original guitarist Richard Burgman grew up in Kingscliff with the rest of the guys in the band.
Richard said, “There’s an uplift that occurs when the band is firing on all eight, and the crowd feels it and gives it right back to you. We experienced that back in the eighties, and we’re experiencing it now. There’s nothing like it”.

Steph Gilmore’s old man Jeff taught Peter and Jeremy Oxley how to surf when they were groms growing up in Kingscliff just down the road from Coolangatta.

Stephanie’s achievements as seven time world champion are well documented, but some Sunnyboys fans aren’t aware that the Oxley brothers Jeremy and Pete did pretty well in the Qld Titles and Australian Surfing Titles in the mid 70’s, before chasing girls, moving to Sydney and Sunnyboys got in the way.

No one knows this better than former pro surfer, Gary “Kong” Elkerton, whose epic scene from seminal surf movie Kong Island’s was set to Sunnyboys surf classic – “Tunnel Of My Love.”

Kong’s Island and Storm Riders were everyone’s fav insane early 80’s surf movies and “Tunnel of my love” was the sickest section. I will never forget Tunnel of my love blasting in the background whilst Rabbit, Kong and Chappy explore the Island through the magic waterfall, up the magic cliff coming out the other side to the incredible sight of perfect right-hand cylinders. Sunnyboys were in their prime in the early to mid 80’s, and the Oxley brothers surfed in the Qld Titles with their surfing peers, so the connection was easy to make.

Kong said, “We’d met the Sunnyboys prior and Jeremy Oxley was a surfer so we knew those guys pretty well. “ Sunnyboys stayed in my red Sigma in the cassette player for many years and it went down well with the girls because it was from a movie I was in.”

Sunnyboys will be performing some shows across select venues in 2021 and all of them are expected to sell out in their 40’th anniversary year celebration.

These Surf Music In Paradise gigs in the Maldives though will be the highlight. These gigs will be an extremely unique celebration of their entire career. They will be performing material from across their entire catalogue including their three albums for Mushroom, the infamous debut ep on the Phantom label and even the odd b-side or rarity. They feel they will be among friends and have come full circle playing literally on the beach where it all began.
